چکیده

Species richness is a widely used surrogate for the more complex concept of biological diversity. Because species richness is often central to ecological study and the establishment of conservation priorities, the biases and merits of richness measurements demand evaluation. The jackknife and bootstrap estimators can be used to compensate for the underestimation associated with simple richness estimation (or the sum of species counted in a sample). Using data from five forest communities, we analyzed the simple measure of richness, the firstand second-order jackknife, and the bootstrap estimators with simulation and resampling methods to examine the effects of sample size on estimator performance. Performance parameters examined were systematic underor overestimation (bias), ability to estimate consistently (precision), and ability to estimate true species richness (accuracy). For small sample sizes in all studied communities (less than ;25% of the total community), the least biased estimator was the second-order jackknife, followed by the firstorder jackknife, the bootstrap, and the simple richness estimator. However, with increases in sample size, the second-order jackknife, followed by the first-order jackknife and the bootstrap, became positively biased. The simple richness estimator was the most precise estimator in all studied communities, but it yielded the largest underestimate of species richness at all sample sizes. The relative precision of the four estimators did not differ across communities, but the magnitude of estimator variance is dependent on the sampled community. Differences in accuracy among the estimators were not independent of community, and accuracy patterns were associated with community species diversity. The results of this study can assist policy makers, researchers, and managers in the selection of appropriate sample sizes and estimators for richness estimation and should facilitate the ongoing assessment of local, and ultimately global, biodiversity.

The concepts of bias, precision and accuracy, and their use in testing the performance of species richness estimators, with a literature review of estimator performance

The purpose of this review is to clarify the concepts of bias, precision and accuracy as they are commonly defined in the biostatistical literature, with our focus on the use of these concepts in quantitatively testing the performance of point estimators (specifically species richness estimators). We first describe the general concepts underlying bias, precision and accuracy, and then describe ...

Developing a Method for Increasing Accuracy and Precision in Measurement System Analysis: A Fuzzy Approach

Measurement systems analysis (MSA) has been applied in different aspect of industrial assessments to evaluate various types of quantitative and qualitative measures. Qualification of a measurement system depends on two important features: accuracy and precision. Since the capability of each quality system is severely related to the capability of its measurement system, the weakness of the two...

Fish assemblages and habitat ecology of River Pinder in central Himalaya, India

Snow-fed river Pinder -a tributary of river Alaknanda in central Himalaya was explored for fish assemblages and habitat specificity. Altogether 27 fish species were reported from three orders, four families and nine genera. Cypriniformes order was dominating followed by Siluriformes and Salmoniformes. Shannon-Weiner diversity index (3.09 to 4.10) and Simpson index of diversity (0.81 to 0.92) of...

تأثیر اندازه و شکل لکه‌های درخت‌زار ‌بر غنا و تنوع گونه‌ای پرندگان در منطقه حفاظت شده کرکس

Determining landscape parameters influencing species richness of habitat patches is one of the most important issues in conservation biology. Many previous studies have investigated the influence of habitat parameters on bird assemblages in forest patches, but studies seeking effects of oasis parameters on bird assemblages are very scarce. Karkas Protected Area is located in semi-arid zone in...
